Decorative Panel, Laminate or Film: What Are You Specifying?
A colour selection identifies the look. A product specification identifies what arrives at the workshop. Separate complete panels from laminate sheets, decorative Film and edging before confirming the core, dimensions and fabrication method.

A finish is only part of the order
A decorative panel includes a board core and its factory-applied faces. A separate laminate sheet or decorative Film is a surface material to be applied through a suitable fabrication process. ABS edging finishes the exposed edge of a panel. These are different items, even when they carry a coordinating Verdécor colour name.
This distinction matters when a designer selects a finish and a cabinet maker turns it into doors, end panels, shelving or a shaped detail. Use the collection to communicate the appearance, then confirm the exact product form and SKU for each component.
Know what arrives at the workshop
| Product form | What it is | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Finished decorative panel | A supplied board with its decorative face or faces already applied. | Core grade, thickness, sheet dimensions, single- or double-sided construction and reverse face. |
| Separate laminate sheet | A surface sheet that needs an appropriate supporting substrate and bonding process. | The exact laminate type, intended application, substrate, fabrication method and any forming limits. |
| Decorative Film | A separate decorative surfacing material, including selected NanoGloss wrapping products. | Compatible substrate, adhesive, shaping process, finish direction and approved use. |
| ABS edge banding | A separate strip for finishing exposed panel edges. | Décor match, width, thickness, length, trimming allowance and fabrication process. |
“Film” in this context means a decorative product. It is not the temporary protective film that may cover a finished face during handling. Nor should every product described as laminate be treated as the same construction or as a traditional kitchen-benchtop laminate.
Choose a core for the component
For a complete panel, the decorative face and core need to be considered together. MDF and particleboard are different substrates with their own grades and processing requirements. There is no universal rule that one is best for every door, carcass or shelf.
Tell the fabricator the component dimensions, hardware and expected use. Ask them to confirm the selected core grade and thickness, machining, fixing requirements and any span or support limitations. A moisture-resistant designation does not make a board waterproof or remove the need for appropriate edge treatment and detailing.
The melamine-faced board guide explains the relationship between surface, core and edge. For an emissions requirement, use the guide to MDI, Super E0 and product-specific evidence, then obtain the report relevant to the actual supplied board.
Check curves and horizontal use separately
A curved cabinet detail may need a separate surface material and a specific workshop process. Do not assume that a finished flat panel can simply be bent, or that a coordinating laminate or Film has the same application limits as the panel.
Current guidance identifies NanoMatte Laminate for vertical use. NanoGloss decorative Film is a wrapping material and should not be treated as a horizontal desktop or kitchen-benchtop finish. Ask for the current instructions for the exact item before designing the radius, adhesive system or fabrication sequence.
Cabinet doors, light-duty shelving and kitchen worktops are different uses. An attractive stone-inspired face on a cabinet does not establish benchtop suitability. For normal residential open storage, see the dedicated shoe and pantry shelving guidance.
Record the product, not just the colour
A useful specification reads: collection + décor name and colour code + product form + core and grade, where applicable + thickness and sheet dimensions + face configuration + matching edge + intended component. Complete it with the exact SKU and current fabrication information.
If a colour appears in several product options, confirm each required item separately. A board and its matching edging are separate purchase selections; a sample confirms the selected appearance but does not supply the missing order details.
Take the selection to fabrication
Use the decorative-panel selection guide to choose the appearance and the sample checklist to document the approved finish. Contact the KnoxOne team for help identifying the product options, then have the approved trade account holder confirm the final order.
