Choosing Panels for Open Shoe and Pantry Shelving
Open shelves need both a suitable surface and a sound panel specification. Start with Verdécor’s pure LPM collections for normal shoe and pantry storage, then check the expected contact, shelf span, thickness, supports and finished edges.

Start with the contact the shelf will see
For normal residential open shoe and pantry shelving, Verdécor recommends WoodGrain, WoodGrain 2070 and Elementa as the starting shortlist. Their pure LPM surfaces suit this type of everyday storage, with particular relevance to shoe shelving where sand and grit can be carried onto the shelf.
This recommendation applies to finished MDF or particleboard panels. It is a surface-selection recommendation, not a structural shelf design or a claim that a finish cannot scratch. The panel thickness, span, supports, load and edge treatment still need to be confirmed for the component.
Choose a surface for everyday storage
WoodGrain and WoodGrain 2070 offer timber-inspired directions. Elementa offers stone, fabric, leather and other material-inspired effects. Within those collections, choose the exact décor by colour, texture and the way it relates to the doors and surrounding room.
For pantry shelves, think about the contact from moving jars, cans and appliances. For shoe shelves, think about dry grit trapped under soles. These practical questions are more useful than choosing only by the smoothness of a sample.
Consider smoother and coated finishes carefully
NanoMatte, FineMatte, WoodGrain Nano and NanoGloss may also be considered for normal residential shelving, but with greater care. Depending on the selected product, these finishes use films, special coatings or particularly smooth surface treatments. Fine particles dragged across them can create fine scratches; glossy and very smooth faces may also make those marks easier to see.
That does not mean a whole collection is unsuitable for every shelf. It means the chosen surface should match the contact it will receive and the owner’s expectations for visible wear. Discuss the exact product and care guidance with the team, particularly where dirty shoes or frequently moved heavy objects are involved.
Check the panel, span and supports
- Product and core: identify the exact finished panel, substrate grade and thickness.
- Dimensions: confirm shelf depth, clear span and any unsupported edges.
- Load: consider the weight of the stored items, including concentrated loads from appliances or containers.
- Supports and fixings: have the cabinet maker select the appropriate arrangement for the panel and carcass.
- Edges and moisture: detail exposed edges and spills appropriately. Moisture resistance does not make the core waterproof.
A raw-sheet dimension is not an approved shelf span. Likewise, choosing a more suitable face for abrasion does not solve deflection or fixing requirements. The fabricator must consider these matters together for the final shelf.
Plan everyday use and care
Remove loose sand and grit rather than dragging it across the face. Lift stored objects when practical and follow the cleaning instructions for the supplied product. Address spills promptly and avoid leaving the board in prolonged contact with water.
This guidance concerns normal indoor residential storage. Kitchen benchtops, constantly wet locations and heavy-duty commercial shelving need a separate product and application review; they should not be approved by extending this recommendation.
Coordinate the shelf with the room
Compare the selected shelf face with the doors, back panel and edge before final approval. The timber-look panel guide helps plan grain and colour, while the product-form guide helps distinguish the finished panel from separate laminate, Film and edging.
Verdécor’s 70 × 100 mm colour samples are free, with free shipping within Australia, and are available to homeowners as well as trade professionals. Browse the colours or contact the KnoxOne team for sample assistance. Paid product orders require an approved trade account; homeowners can pass their selected finish references to their cabinet maker.
Use the sample checklist to document the choice, or return to the main decorative-panel guide to compare all seven collections.
