NanoMatte, FineMatte or NanoGloss? Choosing a Cabinet Finish
Matt and gloss describe only part of a cabinet finish. Compare NanoMatte’s low reflection, FineMatte’s matt depth and NanoGloss’s reflected light, then test the preferred colour against the room and the component being made.

Three different design directions
Choose NanoMatte when low reflection and soft touch are central to the cabinetry palette. Compare FineMatte when you want matt colour with visual depth, including selected metallic effects. Consider NanoGloss when reflection and a glossy colour statement are part of the design.
Those are useful starting points for kitchen doors, wardrobes and interior joinery. They do not make one collection universally better than another. The choice depends on the selected colour, the room’s light, the component and the exact product being supplied.
| Collection | What to look for | Useful sample check |
|---|---|---|
| NanoMatte | A low-reflection solid-colour face with a soft-touch character. | View it beside the room’s busier materials and feel the surface. |
| FineMatte | A PET-film matt surface with depth; metallic character depends on the colour. | Tilt the selected sample to observe the light and any directional effect. |
| NanoGloss | A glossy face with stronger reflection and colour depth. | Check which lights, windows and neighbouring finishes appear in the reflection. |
Compare reflection under one light
Place the three samples together rather than judging separate screen images. Look at them from the front, then from the side, with daylight coming from the same direction. Repeat the comparison under the proposed kitchen or wardrobe lighting.
A low-reflection door can give a quieter background to a prominent timber grain. A reflective door can create a brighter visual accent, but its appearance also includes the surroundings it reflects. Neither effect can be judged from the colour name alone. Light position and a door’s orientation can change the result across a room.
Choose colour and touch together
Compare the actual colour undertone against the benchtop, flooring and wall finish. Two colours described as white, grey or bronze may behave differently when placed beside warm timber or a cool stone. Retain the labelled sample that the project team has approved.
Touch is a separate part of that comparison. NanoMatte’s soft-touch direction and FineMatte’s matt PET surface should be experienced physically. FineMatte’s selected metallic colours need their own sample review; a metallic appearance is not a feature of every FineMatte décor.
Confirm the product form and edge
After choosing the appearance, check what is actually being purchased. A finished panel includes its core. A separate laminate or decorative Film needs a suitable substrate and an approved fabrication process. Similar colour names do not make these items interchangeable.
For example, NanoMatte Laminate has a vertical-use boundary in the current product guidance, while NanoGloss decorative Film is a separate wrapping material. Do not assume either is a kitchen-benchtop surface. Confirm any curved detail with the fabricator using the exact product record. Our guide to panels, laminate and Film sets out the key questions.
Compare the matching edge beside the face as well. Reflection and texture at the corner can matter as much as the broad door face. The edge-banding guide explains the specification detail.
Consider everyday use before approval
Discuss touch points, handles, cleaning and the objects that may contact the surface. Very smooth and glossy finishes can make fine marks more noticeable; the visibility of a mark also depends on colour and light. For shoe or pantry shelves, follow the application-specific shelving guidance rather than choosing by appearance alone.
Use the care instructions for the supplied product. Claims such as scratch-proof, completely fingerprint-free or repairable with a household heat treatment should not be assumed from a collection name.
